ALFALFA

Examples of targets for the Jan 2014 observing run

During the Jan 2014 workshop, we will be conducting observations with L-band wide of galaxies in groups that show evidence of star formation, but were not detected by ALFALFA. Here you will explore a few examples of such targets. (Before you tackle the targets below, make sure you have done the Using SDSS, NED exercise.)

For each example target galaxy below, you are provided with:
(1) Link to image of R (stars) and Hα (star formation) obtained at Kitt Peak
(2) links to public database images and the NED.
Use this information to understand why we want to reobserve these and similar sources.

For comparison, check out a spiral galaxy with "normal" star formation and an ALFALFA detection:
AGC 8475   1329258+110028   202.3575 11.0078   R and Hα   DR7Navigate   DR9Navigate   SkyView.03   SkyView.10   DSS2red.03   DSS2blu.03   DSS2red.10   DSS2blu.10   NED1   NED10   ALFALFA Spectrum

Question: Describe locations of star formation with respect to the distribution of stars for this "normal" galaxy. Describe the spectrum.

And one more interesting one: this one has an ALFALFA detection, but check out the Hα indicators. A wider field R and H&alpha image is provided as well.
