Undergraduate ALFALFA Team Computer Page
A computer running ALFALFA data processing routines must have the following minimum specifications:
- Linux or Mac OS X operating system
- IDL license
- 4 Gb RAM
- 500 Gb disk space
- dual monitors, each with 1280 x 960 resolution or greater (desirable if not strictly required.) Large monitors are also fine. Note that Mac monitors are pricey, and Dell and HP market very nice large monitors at a better price.
Instructions to Obtain a Computer for your Institution
- Have an institutional officer sign the computer purchase agreement provided by
Union College: PDF or doc . Return the scanned copy of the form to Becky and to Linda Clayton: claytonl at union.edu.
- Consult with your campus Information Technology specialists to
design a system that can be supported as much as possible by your
institution. A warning: most institutions do not support Linux, so
if you choose that option, you should make sure that the computer
hardware is compatible with Linux.
- Obtain a quote for your system. The total amount reimburseable by the grant is $3000.
This includes an IDL license, should
you require one.
- Provide the information about your proposed system to Becky for approval.
- Upon approval, there are two possible ways to purchase the machine:
- (Preferred) Becky purchases with a Union College credit card
and ships to you directly. In this case no reimbursement paperwork is
required.
- Your insitution purchases the computer/IDL license and is
reimbursed by Union
upon receipt of the invoice. (This may be necessary if your
institution requires it and/or has a preferred vendor.)
