Getting started with your HTML page
- When you click on the link, the file "progress.txt"
will appear in your browser.
- In a terminal window, make sure you are in the right directory,
/home/hatillo/NAME/spr08. From the terminal, type gedit progress.htm &.
A "gedit" window will open. Notice that the "&" in the preceding command frees up
the terminal for you to continue to use it.
- Then cut and paste from the browser into the gedit window.
- Hit SAVE in the top of your gedit window and the file will
be saved as "progress.htm". (While you are at it, explore how to use the gedit
editor; there are also other editors including "emacs".)
- You can now view your file, by typing into your brower:
file:///home/hatillo/NAME/spr08/progress.htm; notice the 3 back slashes.
- To update/change the file, use the gedit window and the reload the file in the
browser. This should be pretty obvious once you get the hang of it,
but if not, ask another EGG (there are lots of them, and none of them eat
undergraduates!).
