ALFALFA Undergraduate Project

Proposal Title: Low-mass CDM halos outside in group-free environments
Student Name: Adeel Altaf
Adviser: Lyle Hoffmann
Other Collaborators (if any): none
Context: Senior honors thesis
Institution: Lafayette College
Time frame: May 2006
Publication expected? possibly

Description: (up to ~ 500 words)

Adeel plans to write about galaxy formation in lambda-CDM cosmology with particular emphasis on low-mass objects forming outside the group environment. He would like to analyze the ALFALFA data from two quarter-tiles of data, searching as sensitively as possible for low-mass HI objects out to redshift 3000 km/s or so. He plans to start with the individual drifts, search those by eye and with run_extract.pro, then combine the drifts into a cube to be searched by a 3D signal extractor.

ALFALFA region: 14.0h < RA < 15.5h, 8.75d < Dec < 9.75d
ALFALFA data to be used:Level I data (drifts and pos structures)
Other data sets to be used: Publicly archived optical/IR/UV data from NED, SDSS and NVO
Products to be delivered: (e.g. HI catalog of region as defined above; optical identification of all ALFALFA sources in region; cross-reference with catalogs X, Y and Z; other data sets produced)
