What parts of the Galaxy are included in ALFALFA?
And, conversely, what are not?

What parts of the galactic plane are included in ALFALFA? Can be seen from Arecibo?
And, conversely, what are not?

5.1   More coordinates
Supergalactic coordinates are sometimes presented as (l,b) and (x,y,z) style.
What are standards of both? Check out how this all works in flowmodel_dist.pro.
5.2  The Andromeda satellite plane
In a recent paper,
Ibata+ 2013 claim that a significant fraction of M31's satellites are distributed
in a highly planar structure. Make a plot like their Figure 1 showing the ALFALFA coverage
of that region (i.e. in galactic l,b). Make another plot in RA,Dec showing how their
proposed plane of satellites falls on the fall ALFALFA sky. This would be good to share
with in group meeting (say Feb 19th?)
5.2  Gas disks in galaxies: star formation thresholds
Review the meaning of Jean's mass and the Toomre instability criterion. This is discussed
briefly in EAC 9.4.1. See RG's notes (linked on previous page).
Read the paper
Schaye 2004
on star formation thresholds in disks.
5.3  HI and star formation in low metallicity galaxies
Read the paper
Ekta, Chengalur & Pustilnik 2008
on HI and star formation in the most metal-deficient galaxies.
